More on budgeting and taxes. This proposal from the MEA is driven by Michigan's $1.8 billion deficit for FY 12.

  1. I have never studied education, so although it is hard for me to form concrete opinions about the Michigan Education Association’s proposal, here is what I think from an outsiders view:
I think that the concept of finding “a better process to fire ineffective tenured teachers using impartial standards” is really important. I feel like most people have had a bad tenured teacher at least once (I know I have) and sometimes the negative impact they can have on you is astounding. I just don’t think it’s fair to say that just because a teacher has been teaching for a certain number of years they can never be fired. People change, and I think that teachers get burnt out, just like anyone else.
Also I think that the idea of “requiring employers to give their workers time off to attend parent-teacher conferences” sounds like a better idea than it might actually pan out to be. I feel like this is an unnecessary rule because the parents who actually care and want to be a part of their child’s education find ways of doing so regardless of whether or not they can attend conferences for one day. I think that this rule is unfair to most employers.
