  1. I have mixed feelings about the rules of the senate being changed. The United States senate was designed to be a very deliberative body- a saucer to let things cool. However, it is very irritating to the American public when you turn on C-span or the nightly news and hear about a filibuster especially when there are major issues that need to be addressed like unemployment, jobs, a sound manufacturing policy, and a whole host of other issues. I do believe that the senator should be present in order to keep the filibuster going-just like Senator Smith in the movie. I know Senator's have a busy schedule but if one is going to filibuster you think they would want to be present.

  2. I too am glad that the Senate decided to allow filibustering. While it is an action that slows down Senate decision making, it is a neccessary tool to do so to prevent unneccessary proposals. The Senate's job is to let policies cool so that they can deliberate on the issues in a more calm and collective mannor. I would agree as well that if a senator wishes to filibust on an issue, he or she must be present to do so or else it could go on and on.
